We are glad to share with you the latest news from NEGEM project, a Research and Innovation Action funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Programme, to assess the realistic potential of Negative Emission Technologies and Practices (NETPs) and their contribution to climate neutrality, as a supplementary strategy to emissions mitigation.

Join us for this vision workshop: Responsible Negative Emissions Technologies and Practices

The 2nd NEGEM vision workshop will be held online on 28 November 2023. It will present and discuss the vision for realistic and responsible potentials for negative emission technologies and practices (NETPs) globally and in Europe. In this online interactive workshop we will:

  1. Hear about the prevalent developments for carbon dioxide removals in the European Union
  2. Demonstrate the results of the NEGEM scenarios on realistic carbon removal potentials by NETPs globally and in Europe
  3. Present NEGEM’s vision for deployment of NETPs
  4. Discuss the implementation of NETPs in existing climate frameworks.

NEGEM Stakeholders Survey on Carbon Dioxide Removal

We need your opinion, help us shape the future of Carbon Dioxide Removal policy in the EU. The NEGEM project is inviting stakeholders to participate in a survey about their perspectives on Carbon Dioxide Removal technologies and practices. This is a critical period in the development of EU policy on Carbon Dioxide Removal, and it is vital that the views of stakeholders like you are heard. The survey is being conducted by the NEGEM research team at the University of Cambridge, led by Lucrezia Nava and David Reiner. It will take no longer than 15 minutes to complete, it is easy, fun and completely anonymous

Study on future costs and deployment of DACCS and BECCS

This NEGEM study gathered quantitative and qualitative insights from 34 DACCS and BECCS experts interviews and investigated the future costs and the uncertainties on deployment scale of DACCS and BECCS technologies in Europe in 2030, 2040 and 2050.

Science-policy brief on Carbon Dioxide Removal

Prepared by NEGEM partners in June 2023, in response to the public consultation launched by the European Commission to start the process to establish a 2040 climate target for the EU, this document provides science-based facts to help answer questions such as:

  • To what extent is Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) required to achieve climate neutrality?
  • At what scale is it feasible to implement CDR methods, given their technical, environmental, economic and socio-political aspects?
  • How to formulate policies and governance structures to optimize the deployment of CDR within the overall climate architecture?

It also provides key messages on the role of CDR for EU’s 2040 climate policy.

Technical and commercial potential of NETPs in the EU + UK

A new report prepared by the NEGEM team at Imperial College of London provides an assessment of the overall technical and commercial potential to deploy NETPs at the EU Member State level. EU Member States and the UK have approximately 100 Gt CO2 eq. potential to meet a CDR removal quota, in line with an IPCC P3 trajectory. This is obtained by a combination of BECCS (67 Gt CO2 eq. by 2100) and afforestation (33 Gt CO2 eq. by 2100).

Mark your calendars!

We started the preparations for the final project event that will take place in Brussels on 18 April 2024, full day. In the morning session you will get a comprehensive overview of the results achieved by NEGEM over the last 4 years. The afternoon will be dedicated to an extensive policy discussion with CDR experts and stakeholders, to create an enabling framework for the sustainable deployment of negative emission technologies in this decade and towards 2050. The detailed agenda will be available soon.
